Stick figures and nudes: Existential expressionism and abstract dreams in Rick’s premier exhibit in the Carson Valley.

Working in acrylics on canvas, Rick blends vibrant colors with thought-provoking themes. His love for texture is always evident whether through a thick full brush stroke, contrasting colors, or an image sculpted on the canvas beneath the paint.

Many of the paintings on display are of stick figures, and several others of nudes, all in imaginary situations that create unique expressions. Rick’s hope is that by constructing the right situation through the characters, and the right atmosphere in the overall work, the viewer will have a personal interpretation.

Original oil paintings

Howard is a resident of Reno and will be showing paintings of the local area as well as paintings of other areas of the country and the world where he has traveled. Howard paints with a palette knife, applying many layers and stressing his love of color. In this manner, his paintings have a three-dimensional appearance. The paintings are not done in a manner striving for realism but provide an artistic rendition of the subject matter. The majority of the paintings are framed and sprayed with a protective varnish.
